Prior to your baby coming home from the hospital, you probably spent the previous nine months getting ready to create a healthy and happy environment for your little bundle. From painting and decorating the nursery, checking smoke detectors, baby proofing everything, deep cleaning your home and washing all the tiny clothes that you received from loved ones. There’s not a new parent out there who wouldn’t go to every length to prepare a safe environment to bring their baby home. But what about the air quality in your home? We all know that outside air pollution and cigarette smoke can be a health hazard, but evidence suggests that the air inside our homes can be five times more polluted than the air outside.

The EPA lists the most common indoor pollutants found in the house:
Radon: A radioactive gas that is formed in soil and can enter the home through cracks and openings in the floors and walls that are in contact with the ground. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall.
Secondhand Smoke: Comes from burning tobacco products. Children are incredibly vulnerable to second-hand smoke, and can worsen asthma symptoms, is linked to increased risk of ear infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Combustion Pollutants: Are gases (Carbon monoxide or Nitrogen dioxide) or particles that come from burning materials. The significant sources of combustion pollutants improperly vented or unvented fuel-burning appliances are space heaters, wood stoves, gas stoves, water heaters, dryers, and fireplaces. The gases that combustion pollutants give off can interfere with the delivery of oxygen to the body and can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, shortness of breath and increased risk of respiratory infections, not to mention headaches, dizziness, weakness, nausea and even death.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): Are emitted by several products used in the home such as paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, varnishes and waxes, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment, moth repellents, air fresheners, dry-cleaned clothing and wick candles, is just the start of a long list. VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, cause headaches, nausea, damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
Asthma Triggers: Commonly found in the home and include mold, dust mites, secondhand smoke, and pet dander. Asthma triggers can cause symptoms like coughing, chest tightness, wheezing or breathing problems. Asthma attacks can be life-threatening but can be controlled with the right medicine and by decreasing the asthma triggers.
Mold: A living thing that produces spores. Those spores can float around in the air, land on damp surfaces and grow. Inhaling or touching mold can cause hay-fever type symptoms, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, skin rashes and can also trigger asthma attacks.
